On May 5th at 1:52 PM two, companies from the Spokane Fire Department responded to 1521 West 8th Avenue to a report of a rapidly growing natural cover fire in the alley behind the address. When companies arrived they found a fast moving fire in a row of arborvitae bushes that were close to several garages and the nearby church. Several neighborhood members were using their home's garden hoses to apply water to the roofs of the garages to protect them as much as possible until the SFD's arrival.
The fire was brought under control with the assistance from several fire companies. The nature of the fire is incendiary and specific cause remains undetermined. However, the cause is most probably a discarded cigarette in the arborvitaes, which grew exponentially due to the fuel, warm, temperatures and winds (6 – 12 mph).
There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters as a result of this fire.
