At approximately 1100 hours the Spokane Fire Department responded to the 1300 East block of Broadway Ave. on a report of a possible house fire. Spokane Engine 3 responding from the West Central Neighborhood reported a column of smoke evident from several blocks out. Once on scene fire was found coming from one side of a 1 ½ story multi-family residence with heavy smoke visible from the eave lines and attic vents. The fire was immediately upgraded to ensure additional resources responded to deal with the expanding incident. Spokane Quint 4 and Spokane Engine 3 quickly made entry into the structure to begin a coordinated fire attack and search of the residence to ensure all occupants were safely out. Simultaneously, crews were sent to the roof to ventilate the structure to improve conditions and remove heat from within as well as crews sent to the rear of the structure to protect exposures. All occupants had safely evacuated themselves from the structure prior to SFD arrival.  The fire was contained to the room of origin and extinguished within 10 minutes after arrival. Seven fire apparatus along with 23 firefighters responded to fight the fire.  No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigations by the Spokane Fire Special Investigation Unit.

Spokane Fire units were assisted by AMR and Avista. Estimated loss is $75,000.

Educational Message:

?Working smoke alarms save lives, cutting the risk of dying in a home fire in half (NFPA). Smoke alarms should be installed in every room used for sleeping, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Test your smoke alarm once a month. Make sure everyone in your home understands the sound the smoke alarm makes, and knows what to do when activated.
