At 2:42 AM Thursday morning, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) was dispatched to a report of a residence on fire in the 5400 Block of North Walnut. The 911 caller indicated an adult and child were evacuating, and the front of the home was on fire.

Occupants were alerted to the fire when the front window broke due to an exterior fire. A smoke detector had also activated when the smoke began to enter the home through the broken windows.

Within just a few minutes of arriving, SFD companies determined the exterior fire in the front of the residence had extended into the eves and the home's attic spaces. Firefighters completed a complete search of the structure and confined the fire within less than ten minutes.

Fortunately, there were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported. The cause of the fire resulted from improperly discarded smoking materials on the front porch.

Educational Message:

  1. If you smoke, smoke outside.
  2. Use deep, sturdy ashtrays or metal cans if an ashtray is unavailable.
  3. Before throwing out cigarette butts, use water or sand to ensure they are completely out.
  4. Do not ash or throw cigarettes in vegetation, potted plants, or directly into trash cans, as these can all easily catch fire.
  5. Never smoke in bed.
  6. Keep cigarettes, lighters, matches, and other smoking materials out of reach of children, preferably in a locked area.

Fires have occurred with vaping products, including electronic cigarettes. These devices should be used with caution. Vape products that are charging should always be supervised.
