On November 20, 2023, at approximately 12:30 PM, a quick response by the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) prevented a significant fire at a vacant house in the 2300 block of W Broadway Avenue.

Upon arrival, the fire crews, comprising 27 firefighters, reported smoke billowing from the structure. They quickly attacked aggressively, controlling the fire in its early stages. The firefighters' prompt action confined the blaze, preventing it from spreading beyond the initial area.

During the operation, the team conducted a thorough search of the premises. They ascertained that the house, which had been vacant for an extended period, was unoccupied at the time of the incident, ensuring no people or animals were at risk.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was intentionally set by unknown individuals who had forcibly entered the house through a previously boarded rear entrance. The fire resulted in an estimated loss of $30,000, with significant damage being averted thanks to the rapid response of the SFD.

This incident underscores the critical role of community vigilance and the swift response capabilities of the Spokane Fire Department. The SFD extends its gratitude to the alert neighbor whose timely call to 911 was instrumental in preventing a more severe outcome.

In light of the incident and as we approach the colder months, the Spokane Fire Department emphasizes the importance of fire safety, particularly regarding vacant structures. Residents are urged to report any suspicious activities and to ensure that properties, whether occupied or vacant, adhere to fire safety norms to prevent similar incidents.
