Spokane Mayor David Condon has ordered flags at all city facilities to be lowered to half-staff to coincide with Gov. Jay Inslee’s directive that state and U.S. flags at all state agency facilities be lowered from February 9 – 13 in remembrance of former Gov. John Spellman.

Spellman was a Seattle native that served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 before graduating from Seattle University in 1949. He went on to serve as the Washington State governor from 1981 to 1985.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of former Gov. Spellman,” said Mayor Condon. “Spokane joins the rest of the state in honoring and remembering the late governor.”

Spellman passed away from pneumonia on January 15. The memorial service will be held Monday at 12 p.m., at St. James Cathedral, 804 Ninth Avenue, Seattle, Washington. A Celebration of Life for Governor John and Lois Spellman will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Bell Harbor Conference Center, 2211 Alaskan Way, Seattle, Washington.
