Spokane Mayor David Condon has appointed Matthew Antush, an assistant Spokane County public defender, to be the next Municipal Court judge.

Antush, a Gonzaga Law School graduate, spent 24 years as an assistant city public defender before moving to the Spokane County Public Defender’s Office last year. His nomination to the Municipal Court bench to replace Judge Shelley Szambelan, who accepted a Superior Court appointment, must be confirmed by the City Council.

“Matt has a great reputation among the legal community, and his experience and extensive knowledge of the situations of the people who interact with Municipal Court make him the right fit for the bench,” Condon said.

Antush would serve Szambelan’s term, which expires in 2021. He would have to seek re-election to continue on the bench.

A screening panel of community members and city staff reviewed applicant materials and recommend three finalists. Finalists interviewed with two panels of community members and city staff and participated in a community forum last week.
