Suspect arrested in Northwest Spokane stabbing incident.
On 12-6-18 just before 6 p.m., SPD responded to a stabbing in the 5100 block of N Walnut St. An adult male victim was found suffering from an apparent stab wound to the torso. Officers immediately began rendering first aid until SFD and AMR Medics arrived. The victim was transported to a local hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.
Officers investigating the scene learned that the victim and his adult son were outside working on a vehicle when they were approached by the suspect. Very shortly thereafter, in what appears to be a completely unprovoked attack, the victim was stabbed. The adult son attempted to follow the suspect, but he was initially able to get away.
An SPD K-9 unit was summoned to the scene and began looking for the suspect. A little before 8 p.m., while Officers were still searching the area, and alert citizen called 911 from the 4900 block of N Adams St. The caller reported a suspicious person possibly hiding in the alley. Officers quickly arrived and contacted the person in the alley, who was detained and almost immediately identified as the stabbing suspect. Further investigative information linked the male with the crime.
23-year-old Corey A. Taylor was arrested and booked into Spokane County Jail for 1st Degree Assault. Taylor also had an outstanding felony warrant from the Washington State Department of Corrections. Taylor is a convicted felon with a history of felonious assault.
SPD is not seeking any additional suspects, and there is believed to be no continuing threat to the community.
This is yet another example of how the community plays a vital role in keeping Spokane safe. The alert citizen tip of the suspicious male in the alley is what led to a violent person being arrested.
This incident occurred at a time of day when many citizens were out and about. One tool SPD utilizes in capturing violent subjects is our K-9 units. When a K-9 is utilized, citizens will often see numerous police vehicles in the area parked in strategic perimeter locations. There will also be announcements made using the PA systems notifying every one of the use of the police K-9, and asking those in the area uninvolved to stay inside or leave the area. If you’re in a location where a police dog is being utilized, please help us maximize the chances of catching the suspect by staying inside and giving the K-9 units room to work. This is another way in which the community and SPD can work together to make Spokane safer.
