The City of Spokane today has announced that 12 community organizations have received grants of between $2,000 and $6,000 to help put on programs and events that honor and celebrate the rich diversity of the City’s cultural communities.
The City allocated a total of $40,000 for the grant program; this is the second year for these grants.
“The selection committee was intentional in selecting 12 events that looked very different from one another but shared a common commitment to public service and participation,” said Multi-Cultural Affairs Director, Gloria Ochoa-Bruck. “We are very excited for these community events!”
The City received 16 applications from groups and organizations planning a wide range of cultural events in the coming year. Applications received represented cultural festivals and celebrations, arts fairs, and programs for culturally underrepresented populations, lecture-demonstrations and workshops with a cultural focus.
All events selected for funding met the criteria of being cultural events that are free and open to the public and held in the City of Spokane.
The selection committee included Jaxon Riley, Leadership Spokane; Skyler Oberst, CEO, Seekr Community Advocate; Freda Gandy, Martin Luther King Jr. Family Outreach Center; Guillermo Mendoza, Spokane Community College, HBPA; Carolyn Casey, Community Colleges of Spokane, and City Council Member Karen Stratton.
