Project to Add Left-Turn Signals on Hamilton Corridor to Begin

A project to improve safety along the Hamilton Street Corridor from Desmet to North Foothills is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 29, and continue through November. The project is designed to make long-desired safety and traffic flow improvements at six intersections, including the addition of dedicated left turn pockets and signals.

Here’s what’s included:

  • The Hamilton intersections with Mission, Indiana and North Foothills will get protected left-turn signals (arrows) for all four directions at the intersection.

  • The Hamilton intersections at Sharp and Illinois will get protected left-turn signals for traffic traveling north and south on Hamilton. Traffic turning left onto Hamilton from these streets will yield to through traffic.

  • The Hamilton and Desmet intersection, which currently has a pedestrian-activated rapid flashing beacon, will be upgraded to include a full traffic signal. Protected left-turn signals will be added for traffic traveling north and south on Hamilton. Traffic turning left onto Hamilton will yield to through traffic.

Work will begin first on the Hamilton intersections at Mission and Desmet, with that work continuing into August. Then, crews will move to the Hamilton intersections with Sharp and Illinois, and then finally Indiana and North Foothills.

One lane in each direction on Hamilton will be maintained throughout the project, along with access to businesses. But, it will cause delays on this heavily used commuter route. Closures or lane closures on the impacted east-west streets will be needed to complete the work. This section of Hamilton carries about 30,000 vehicles a day.
