Crews will begin the concrete grind and overlay project of the Maple Street Bridge on Sunday, Aug. 27. The $4.7 million project involves removing approximately three-quarters of an inch of the current deck surface and replacing it with polyester concrete. The specialized product is able to be placed in very thin layers, has a high level of bonding ability with the existing concrete deck, and has increased structural capacity. Once complete, the deck concrete will act as one solid deck as originally designed.
The project is expected to take approximately 10 weeks and is estimated to be completed in mid-November, if the weather holds. As often as possible work will be done in the overnight hours and on weekends to reduce traffic impacts. Traffic routes impacting types of vehicles will change often throughout the project and the bridge will be fully closed intermittently at times. Drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes, and when possible, avoid peak traffic times because of lane reductions and occasional closures.
Initial Traffic Impacts:
On the evening of Sunday, Aug. 27, traffic revisions will be put in place until approximately, Sept. 9.
During overnight closures vehicle and freight truck drivers will be detoured separately.
Vehicle traffic will go eastbound on 3rd Ave., turn northbound onto Lincoln St. to cross the Monroe Street Bridge, and continue north. Drivers can access northbound Maple St. at Northwest Blvd.
Freight traffic will go eastbound on 3rd Ave., turn northbound onto Division St. to cross the Spokane River and continue north. Drivers can access northbound Maple St. from westbound Indiana Ave. and Northwest Blvd.
Travel for all will be reduced to one lane going southbound across the bridge during this initial period.
Ongoing Traffic Impacts:
This is a complex project, requiring several traffic plan changes. Drivers are encouraged to follow City of Spokane social media, access the weekly obstruction notice, and sign up for the Community Update weekly email and tune into local media to stay informed.
