The League of American Bicyclists honored the efforts of the City of Spokane to build better places for people to bike with a silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award.

Spokane joins 460 communities across the country in the movement for safer streets and better bicycling for everyone. The award recognizes Spokane for its commitment to creating transportation and recreational resources that benefit its residents of all ages and abilities while encouraging healthier and more sustainable transportation choices.

“We are honored to accept the silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community award after being at bronze since 2010. This milestone reflects the progress Spokane has made through prioritizing infrastructure improvements and investing in initiatives that make our city safer for cyclists,” said City of Spokane Planner Colin Quinn-Hurst.

“Finding ways to build and maintain infrastructure to support multiple transportation options for our community is a welcome challenge for our Public Works team; this designation supports our team and the work they do,” said City of Spokane Public Works Director Marlene Feist.

“This award is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our Public Works and Planning departments, who continuously prioritize making our city safer and more accessible for everyone,” Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown said.

The silver-level BFC award recognizes Spokane’s commitment to improving conditions for all people who bike through investments in pro-bike policies and infrastructure. Some recent projects include:

  • Post Street Bridge
  • Riverside Ave
  • South Gorge Loop Trail
  • Centennial Trail Connection on Summit
  • Cincinnati Greenway
  • Garland Avenue Pathway
  • Spokane Falls Blvd protect bike lanes from Front Street to Cincinnati
  • Purchase of dedicated sweeper and snow plow equipment for protected bike lanes
  • Adopting a new Bicycle Parking Ordinance to provide short-term and long-term bicycle parking
  • Identifying a Bicycle Priority Network and Accelerated Mobility Playbook to facilitate future bikeways that accommodate all ages and abilities
  • Continuing to support community biking events such as Bike Everywhere Month, and the Mayor’s Bike to Work Day

This award also honors communities that make investments in bike education programs and that hold events to promote and encourage people to choose biking. The City of Spokane is grateful to have several community partners that help make events like the Bike Swap (CommuteSmartNW), the Thursday Night Bike Rides (ShackTown), Summer Parkways, and Active Transportation seminars (Spokane Regional Health District) possible.

The City of Spokane is looking forward to additional bike-friendly investments in the near future, including the 27 by 2027 project, which will create a 27-mile network of safe, comfortable, connected bike routes by 2027.
