During Monday’s Legislative Session, the Spokane City Council voted 5-2 on a local transportation tax for commercial parking for the purpose of funding transportation system maintenance and safety improvements, and which establishes incentives for efficient land use that meet the goals of the City's Comprehensive Plan.

“I appreciate everyone’s feedback around the commercial parking tax,” said Council Member Paul Dillon. “The delayed implementation time will give us more of an opportunity to work with stakeholders. This ordinance will help support much-needed revenue for infrastructure while helping guide the use of land to better use of land to build a vibrant city, as one third of our downtown space is for car storage.”

The commercial parking tax rate is 12% (0.12), with credits that reduce the rate for student and employee parking, as well as residential parking. As adopted, the tax will go into effect on April 1, 2026.
