Mayor Lisa Brown has appointed Stephen Williams to be the new Director of Emergency Communications and lead the creation of the City of Spokane’s new emergency communications center, the Spokane United 911 Network (SUN).

Williams brings 25 years of global executive experience in public safety operations and technology to the role. He previously served as the Director of Emergency Communications & Citizen Services for the City of Virginia Beach and as Chief of Operations for Washington, D.C.’s Office of United Communications. Most recently, he has been working to design and launch an emergency response and security center in Saudi Arabia.

He also has pertinent technology experience, working previously for Hexagon and Prepared 911.

Williams was selected following a thoughtful and competitive recruitment process that included a selection committee representing the Spokane Police Department, Spokane Fire Department, and relevant labor organizations.

“The City of Spokane is looking forward to having Stephen on the team. His extensive public safety experience will be instrumental as we stand up our new public safety answering point. I am confident his leadership will ensure we are setting a strong foundation for the future of emergency communications in our city,” Mayor Brown said.

Williams will begin his role in early February.
