The City of Spokane, in partnership with North Hill Christian Church and Jewels Helping Hands, is opening an additional scattered site shelter for unhoused LGBTQIA+ community members.

“The Aurora Center,” located at 4620 N Post St, will provide both daytime and nighttime services, with 15 emergency overnight beds available. Providence, the Center for Growth and Empowerment, and Community, Advocacy and Treatment Spokane will partner with the shelter to provide a variety of wraparound services at the site including medical care, substance use disorder treatment, and housing placement.

The goal of this shelter is short-term stabilization and connection to positive housing outcomes for shelter guests.

“We at North Hill Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are excited about making our space available to our community members in need and look forward to the success of the Aurora Shelter. We are committed to follow God’s calling to be a whole community where all people are welcome, all are accepted, and each of us has an opportunity to find and joyfully share our gifts, talents and passions,” said Reverend Chris Snow.

“We are seeing transformational work happening at our various scattered site shelters and we are looking forward to that continuing at the Aurora Center,” Mayor Lisa Brown said. “LGBTQIA+ individuals experiencing homelessness face unique and urgent challenges. This new shelter will provide a safe space where they can find support, community, and access to the resources they need.”

Neighbors who want to learn more about the Aurora Center are invited to attend an open house at North Hill Christian Church on March 5 from 4 to 5 p.m. This open house will provide an overview of how the shelter will operate, information about safety and supervision, and an opportunity to meet Jewels Helping Hands staff. The open house will end with a Q&A session for community members.
