Six new Spokane Police Department officers were sworn in on May 12. This brings the total number of SPD officers to 279.
Two of the officers are lateral officers, meaning they have experience as police officers in other cities and are able to begin work with SPD more quickly, specifically on patrol in Downtown Spokane. The four other officers will attend the Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLEA) in Burien, WA and upon graduation, will begin work with SPD.
The new officers have prior experience including: work as a patrol officer with the Arlington County Police Department in Virginia, work as a deputy for the Pinal County Sheriff's Office in Arizona, volunteer work as a Spokane Police Department Co-Op, work in real-estate, and volunteer work as a Spokane Police Department Reserve Officer.
