Four miles of South Hill between Manito and Comstock parks will come alive with hundreds of walkers, runners, cyclists, skaters and fun-loving Spokanites for the annual Summer Parkways celebration.
Spokane's Summer Parkways was inspired by a Bogota, Colombia event called Ciclovia (meaning “bike path” in Spanish). Streets are closed to vehicular traffic and opened to games, walkers, cyclists, exercise groups, skateboards and other human-powered activity.
Summer Parkways, in its fifth year, will expand to two events filled with bikes, feet, wheels, dance, music, food and fun! Enjoy the four miles of car-free streets, participate in outdoor activities and be part of Spokane's biggest block parties! Join in and bring friends, family, and neighbors. The more the merrier!
Summer Parkways promotes a healthy lifestyle and provides a chance to join families, friends and neighbors for free outdoor, family-friendly and community activities. Spokane is one of 70 communities throughout North America involved in the Open Streets Project, seeking innovative ways to achieve environmental, social, economic and public health goals.
The first Summer Parkways event is on the South Hill on June 18. You can walk, cycle, skate or jog the course between Manito and Comstock parks. Stop by one of the booths, swivel your hips hula hooping, unleash creativity with chalk art, dance to the beat of Zumba or follow a “cycling” tango troupe. Enterprising kids can set up a lemonade stand or sell cookies. Add some color, and stand out in the crowd, adorn yourself and your bike, or join the Bike Decorating Contest at 7 p.m. in Manito Park.
New this year, Summer Parkways is bringing the party to the streets around Corbin Park in July with the first Corbin Park Street Party. A joint effort between Summer Parkways and the Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council, streets around the park will be closed to motorized traffic and filled with festivities and outdoor fun.
Come to Summer Parkways and participate in the action, or there are volunteer opportunities. For more information check us out online and on Facebook.
