A more bike-friendly Spokane

Just last month, Spokane was recognized again as a Bicycle Friendly Community. But the City isn't stopping there in its quest to make Spokane a better place for cyclists.

City planners are redesigning the bike map to make navigating Spokane more intuitive. Gone are classifications like “Bicycle Boulevard” and “Marked/Shared Roadway.” Instead, the map focuses on two pieces of information to help bikers more easily find the best routes: the amount of traffic and the presence – or lack of – a bike lane on a given path.

The City is also looking at design practices to make Spokane safer and more appealing for bicyclists. Ideas include:

  • Bikeways every ½ mile
  • Six-foot standard bike lane (the current standard is a five-foot width)
  • Constructing facilities for transportation, not recreation

What do you think about the ideas? Is the map more or less helpful than the current bike map? Keep in mind the proposed map is still a work-in-progress and is only a draft, but we want to hear from you. Leave your comments below.
