In the event of a major disaster in our city, Spokane has to be ready.
This week, it was my pleasure to welcome Mayor Walter Maddox of Tuscaloosa, Alabama to Spokane. I invited him to our region to talk about a topic he has been nationally recognized for: emergency management.
On April 27, 2011, Tuscaloosa was struck by an EF-4 tornado which destroyed 12 percent of his city. Following the disaster, Mayor Maddox emerged as an efficient, earnest, unwavering hero of the storm.
His visit and talk at the Spokane Fire Training Center was one in a series of trainings and workshops Greater Spokane Emergency Management has coordinated to better prepare the region for a disaster.
