Illuminating Courage will pay tribute to Washington’s fallen heroes

I can't think of a more appropriate day for the groundbreaking of Illuminating Courage. On national Patriot Day, as we remember the tragedy of 9/11 with the words ‘never forget' in our hearts, we begin work on a beautiful monument that will honor the memories of Washington state's fallen heroes.

Ground broke today on the Illuminating Courage Military Memorial outside the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. It will stand 24 feet tall and stretch 42 feet wide as it features the names of fallen heroes from our state Post 9/11 to the present. The dedication of the monument is set for this Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

We have a duty as a nation, as a community, and as individuals to remember and honor the men and women who have died while serving in the country's armed forces. They are our heroes. They are our examples. Their service and sacrifice leaves us in awe and gratitude which can never be repaid.

This new memorial in Spokane will give us a striking and beautiful way to remember, thank, and illuminate the courage of our fallen heroes.
