Junior Golf Team Competes at the Regional Level

The Spokane PGA Junior Golf Team was one of four teams that qualified for the West Regional Championship on September 25-27, 2015. While the team finished 0-3 this past weekend, the opportunity to compete at this level is an accomplishment in itself. The City Council publicly saluted the team for a successful season of winning or tying 15 of 16 games and taking first in the Sub-Regional championship.

The team is in its inaugural year and this is the first time it has been offered in the Pacific Northwest. The team consists of ten golfers who are the best from the regular season, including one individual Washington State Champion and two individual Idaho State Champions.

“One of the most rewarding parts of participating in the junior league program is watching how the kids interact with each other and how it brings a team atmosphere to an individual sport like golf,” said Derek Siesser, Assistant Golf Professional at Qualchan Golf Course. “It is also great to see the pros get involved in growing the game with local youth, as that has been lacking in past years.”

The team was formed through the collaborated efforts of local PGA golf professionals seeking to grow junior golf programs. Local courses offering junior league programs include: Qualchan, Esmeralda, Indian Canyon, Spokane Country Club, Avondale, Fairway, Manito, and more anticipated for next season.

About PGA Junior League
PGA Junior League Golf (PGA JLG) was established in 2011 to promote the game for boys and girls, ages 13 and under. PGA JLG features team vs. team competitions in structured leagues that provide a popular, less stressful scramble format as opposed to stroke-play competition.
