One year ago, we celebrated the opening of the Family Justice Center, the home of the Spokane Regional Domestic Violence Team. The center brings together law enforcement, prosecutors, and advocates all under one roof in the YWCA complex (930 N. Monroe). A year on, the consortium at the Family Justice Center has made nearly 600 arrests for violations of protection orders.

The initial impact is encouraging, but it's just the beginning. In fact, the number of reported domestic violence incidents may actually increase before we see a decline. That's because part of the beginning is giving victims a voice, making them feel comfortable enough to speak out and letting them know that they are not alone. The Family Justice Center was started to give victims that voice and to give them the help they need.

Today, as we celebrate the work of the Family Justice Center, let us remind ourselves that we all share in the responsibility to stop domestic violence. Together, we say no more – not today, not tomorrow, not any day.
