The City of Spokane has been working for some time on the scheduled 2017 update to the Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan is a 20-year vision for the City and a roadmap for Spokane’s future that sets the framework for physical, social, and economic development of the City. As such, it provides guidance for city development – the major land uses, transportation systems, parks, open spaces, and centers for shopping and employment, as well as where investment in utilities, capital facilities, and services will be needed. On or before June 30, 2017, the City must complete its periodic update to ensure compliance with the Growth Management Act (GMA).
Staff will present each chapter to the Plan Commission during their regularly scheduled workshops. The purpose of each workshop is to inform the Commission of changes to the chapters and provide an opportunity for feedback. After all of the chapters have been presented, and any applicable comments have been incorporated, staff will host four public open houses, one in Downtown Spokane and one in each Council District, to receive comments from the public. The information gleaned from those open houses will be presented to the Plan Commission for consideration. Plan Commission public hearings on the final draft document will then be held in January 2017. City Council study sessions will be held after the Plan Commission review workshops have been completed, with the City Council adoption process slated to begin in early 2017.
The first Plan Commission workshop will be on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at 2:00 p.m., in the City Council Chambers located at 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. It will cover Chapter 11 – Neighborhoods as well as Neighborhood Profiles.
The schedule for additional Plan Commission workshops is as follows:
