In recent years the University District has seen many improvements. This summer will be no exception as Martin Luther King Jr. Way will expand from Sherman to Erie Street.
The portion of MLK Jr. Way in front of WSU will feature street cross sections with street-side storm swales, and a sidewalk on the north side of the street. The sidewalk will stop at the east end of the WSU campus and pedestrians will be encouraged to use the Ben Burr Trail which will be constructed alongside the river this summer. The portion of Martin Luther King Jr. Way near the former Brown Building Supply will include a two-way street cross section with bike lanes and storm swales. Vegetation for this project will match existing MLK Jr. Way plants and incorporate plants native to the Spokane area.
Phase 1 of this project expanded Riverfront Avenue/Martin Luther King Jr. Way from Division to Sherman Street and was completed in May 2012. In the future, Phase 2B construction will extend Martin Luther King Jr. Way from Erie to Perry Street.
