The pilot program Spokane Matters is addressing specific needs and characteristics of each district throughout Spokane. All three districts and downtown have quarterly meetings where City of Spokane departments, social service agencies, the private sector, faith organizations and educational institution representatives meet. This process engages community stakeholders most familiar with the opportunities and challenges in each District and coordinates solutions collaboratively.
District 3 is the northwest portion of the City of Spokane. Currently the teams are focusing on four projects: a Shadle/Walmart safety strategy, restoring Dutch Jake’s park, health and safety outreach and education, and Youth Services coordination.
As a community member from the North Indian Trial Neighborhood Council, Mark Davies has been part of the Spokane Matters meetings in District 3 from the beginning. “The concept of different City staff and community stakeholders coming together is great, although there are still some logistics being worked out,” explained Mark. “The district model is still finding its role within the broader context of work that the Community Assembly and Neighborhood Councils do. The City and Community partnership in this work is still working itself out and that’s okay because it’s still early.”
Overall, Mark has had a positive experience with the Spokane Matters program. He feels comfortable sharing his opinion and offering suggestions. Mark praised the style of the meeting saying, “It’s conducive to engaging and hearing from multiple parties and viewpoints.” The City of Spokane and Mark would both love to see more District 3 neighbors participate in the Spokane Matters program. Join us at the Quarter 3 meeting, Wednesday, September 6 from 4 – 5:30 p.m. at the West Central Community Center, 1603 N. Belt Street.
