Pedestrian Bridge Named University District Gateway Bridge

Monday, April 23 the City Council unanimously adopted the resolution to accept the Plan Commission’s recommendation to name the new bike and pedestrian bridge the “University District Gateway Bridge.” The cable bridge is currently under construction and will connect the growing University District with the Sprague corridor.

Last spring, Garco Construction broke ground on the University District Gateway Bridge project. That same month the City of Spokane started the #NameTheBridge campaign, seeking the public’s input on the bridge’s name. The 34 day campaign led to 425 submissions with 281 of them being unique bridge name suggestions!

Following the campaign, a naming committee made up of City and University District leaders met and scoured the list of names and sent five name recommendations to Plan Commission. These recommendations were the University District Gateway Bridge, the Salish word for “Spokane Way,” the U Crossing, the U District Nexus, and People’s Unity Bridge. In the end, City Council approved Plan Commission’s suggestion to name the bridge the University District Gateway Bridge.

The 120 foot tall pedestrian bridge is scheduled to open this September! Follow the City of Spokane on Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date on construction and eventually information on a grand opening celebration.
