Summer is in full swing! The City of Spokane wants everyone to remain safe as summer conditions warm up. With summer heat rising, the perfect conditions for fire, hot and dry, make summer safety a concern.
Staying safe this summer means eliminating any fire hazards near and around your property. Such fire hazards include tall dry vegetation and debris. Overgrown vegetation and debris is easily ignitable in summer heat and can catch and spread fire quickly.
To report a fire hazard concern please contact My Spokane 311 by phone (3-1-1), online chat or in person in City Hall. You can also fill out a complaint via the online combined complaint form.
If a property owner fails to comply with a Notice of Violation they may be subject to a class 1 civil infraction for the violation or will be charged with the cost to remove the overgrown vegetation and/or debris. Other fire concerns should be directed to the Spokane Fire Department at 625.7000. In case of fire, CALL 911.
Additionally, on Monday, July 16 the Spokane City Fire Marshall ordered burn restrictions. Any outdoor fire without a chimney and spark arrester such as a backyard fire pit or campfire are prohibited. In addition, any open burning of fields and yard waste is prohibited at all times. The restriction will continue until further notice; such restrictions are subject to change depending on conditions.
Unsafe or otherwise restricted fires will be required to be extinguished. Failure to comply with the burning restrictions could have serious consequences. A person who fails to take immediate action to extinguish or otherwise discontinue unauthorized burning when ordered to do so is guilty of a misdemeanor. That person can face a fine of up to $1,000 and/or up to 90 days in jail.
