Neighborhood Safety: What do neighbors have to do with it?

Crime, particularly property crime, was the number one concern of the Spokane residents who responded to a survey conducted by the Neighborhood Safety Committee last year. This came as no surprise, but did you know that the best crime-fighting tool is knowing your neighbors?

Who are the crime fighters in your neighborhood? We tend to think it is the sole responsibility of the police, but day in and day out, it’s each and every one of us being vigilant and aware of our surroundings.

This means collectively, a neighborhood can be a crime-fighting force of residents with vested interests in the safety of their neighbors. The key is to get to know your neighbors, their names, and how to contact them, if needed. Remember, there is strength in numbers.

The Neighborhood Safety Committee has developed several tools for Spokane residents. The Neighborhood Concerns and Resource List addresses the chief concerns identified in last year’s survey. Along with the list of topics are links to the agencies where your questions can be answered. View the list on the City of Spokane website.

Coming soon will be a bi-monthly calendar of neighborhood safety themes with the goal of promoting interest and awareness among the Neighborhood Councils. Let me be the first to wish you all a happy “Getting to Know Your Neighbors” season in May and June.

While we’re on the subject, I urge you to attend your Neighborhood Council meetings. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors and learn what’s going on in your neighborhood. Find your neighborhood and the time and place of your Neighborhood Council.

Please get to know your neighbors, become involved in your Neighborhood Council and help your neighborhood be the best place in which to live.
