SPOKANE – The newly renovated South Suspension Pedestrian Bridge in Riverfront Park re-opened to the public this morning.
The twin pedestrian bridges were built for Expo ’74, and needed significant repair.
“With the 50th anniversary celebration of Expo ’74 coming up in May, and a beautiful spring run-off, we’re pleased to re-open the south bridge on schedule and on budget,” said Garrett Jones, interim City Administrator for the City of Spokane. “Renovating the twin suspension bridges was vital to ensuring their longevity for another 50 years.”
A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned as part of the Expo celebration. Details will be shared in May.
The north suspension bridge underwent a complete renovation in 2021/2022, and the south suspension bridge received almost identical repairs including a new deck, repair/replacement of corroded steel floor beams, railing modifications, and repair/replacement of lighting and electrical components.
The south bridge renovation began in May 2023. The project cost $2.8 million, including design, engineering, and construction management. Funding came from a $1.4 million Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office grant, matched by $1.4 million in City of Spokane real estate excise tax (REET) funding allocated by the City Council. Garco Construction completed the project.
