Spokane, Wash. – Construction begins early next week on the renovation of High Bridge dog park.

The nearly 10-acre site, centrally located just west of downtown at 330 S. A Street, will be temporarily closed beginning August 5, 2024 to accommodate renovation. It’s scheduled to re-open in early October 2024.

“The renovation of High Bridge dog park helps meet a community desire identified in our Parks and Natural Lands Master Plan,” said Jason Conley, interim director of City of Spokane Parks & Recreation. “This renovation follows guidelines we developed from user and non-user feedback around how to build healthy dog park spaces and how to mitigate their impacts to surrounding areas. We really learned how dog parks don’t just serve as an off-leash space for dogs, but as places where you build community and meet new neighbors; they are as much for people as they are for dogs, in that sense.”

The renovation includes:

  • Small and large dog areas
  • Agility features
  • Surfacing improvements
  • Seating
  • Water fountains in each dog area
  • Expanded paved parking
  • Improved entry/exit, including ADA accessible dog park area
  • Improved lighting
  • Fire fuels reduction through selective tree thinning

High Bridge will serve as one of two replacements for the unofficial south hill dog park, displaced due to construction of Peperzak middle school. The plan to replace the former location involves two locations to best meet the needs and desires we heard through outreach with dog park users and neighbors.

  • Renovation of High Bridge dog park – This will serve as the larger ‘regional’ dog park area, at nearly 10 acres.
  • Building a smaller dog park near the former site – This will serve as the ‘neighborhood’ dog park area, smaller in size but closer to the site of the former unofficial dog park. It will be about 1.7 acres near the corner of 63rd & Regal. Construction of this facility is underway, with plans to open it in October as well. In the meantime, a temporary dog park is open near the site at 65th & Mt. Vernon.

During construction at High Bridge, dog park users can visit the current south hill location near Peperzak middle school and downtown pocket dog park (Riverside & Adams).

Funding for the renovation is provided by Spokane Public Schools. After completion, they will be operated by City of Spokane Parks & Recreation.
