Juvenile arrested for carrying BB gun on school grounds

On January 26, 2023 around 4:30 pm, officers responded within minutes to Shaw Middle School for a possible person with a gun.  School officials were advised there was an unknown male outside the school with a gun in his waistline.  Since after school activities were still happening at the time of the incident, the school quickly went into a brief lock down.  Officers arrived and located a juvenile (15) matching the description for the suspect.  A gun was located on the juvenile and it was determined the gun was a BB gun.

The juvenile (15) was arrested for possessing a dangerous weapon on school facilities and booked into the Spokane Juvenile Detention facility.

SPD wants to remind everyone that BB and replica guns can appear very much like an actual firearm and it is illegal to carry such guns on school property. This is a good example of a bystander being vigilant and alerting school officials about the gun. SPD strives to keep our children and teachers safe, if you see something, say something.  The picture below is the actual BB gun that was located on the juvenile.  BB guns alone can cause significant injury and when mistaken for an actual firearm, can lead to catastrophic outcomes.
