Cell Phone Theft Prevention

Phones are one of the most commonly stolen items – but you can protect yours.

Set Up Your Device

  • Use a strong PIN, password, or biometric lock.
  • Enable remote tracking and wipe options (like Find My iPhone or Find My Device).
  • Set timeouts and lock screens to activate quickly.
  • Back up your data regularly.

In Public Spaces

  • Stay aware – thieves often target people in bars, restaurants, or crowded events.
  • Use a strap or tether to keep your phone secure.
  • Store phones in zippered, close-to-body pockets or bags.
  • Don’t hand your phone to strangers.

Did You Know? Most phone theft victims are distracted – texting, walking, or using apps in public without noticing what’s around them.

If Your Phone Is Stolen

  • Use your tracking app to locate or lock the device.
  • Report the theft to your cell phone service provider.
  • Change passwords to email, banking, and social media accounts.
  • File a police report with your phone’s IMEI or serial number.
  • File a report by calling the non-emergency line: 509.456.2233 or submit one online.
  • Remotely wipe your phone if you can’t get it back.

Law enforcement is here to help. Theft isn’t your fault – and quick action helps prevent identity theft.
