Home Safety During Construction or Extended Absences

Heading out of town or working on a long-term home improvement project? A few extra precautions can go a long way in keeping your property safe while you're away or under construction.

While You’re Away

  • Set interior and exterior lights on timers to create the appearance of activity.
  • Ask a trusted neighbor to check in periodically and collect mail or packages.
  • Avoid posting travel plans on social media until after you return.
  • Lock up all doors, windows, sheds, and gates – and double check before leaving.

Did You Know? Thieves often target homes that appear vacant for more than a few days. A few small actions can make your home look lived-in even while you’re gone.

While Under Construction

  • Make sure your property is well lit, especially around entry points and work zones.
  • Install security cameras or video doorbells to monitor activity and deliveries.
  • Keep tools, materials, and equipment securely stored when not in use – don’t leave them visible from the street.
  • Record serial numbers for all major tools and equipment; consider engraving them for identification.
  • Keep a detailed log of contractors and subcontractors working on your site, including names, company info, and scheduled work dates.
  • Maintain a clean, tidy worksite. It helps deter theft and improves safety for everyone involved.
