Mail & Package Theft Prevention

Package thefts tend to increase during the holiday season – but they can happen year-round. A little planning can help keep your deliveries safe.

Protecting Your Mail

  • Never send cash through the mail.
  • Deposit mail inside post offices or blue USPS mailboxes.
  • Pick up mail promptly – don’t leave it overnight.
  • If you’re away, ask a neighbor or have the post office hold your mail.
  • Consider installing a locking mailbox.
  • Sign up for Informed Mail through USPS to manage delivery notifications and receive a daily email with images of your upcoming mail.

Package Theft Prevention

  • Use shipment tracking and delivery alerts.
  • Choose options that require a signature.
  • Ship to a trusted friend, neighbor, or office if possible.
  • Ask carriers to hold your package for pickup.
  • Consider a secure drop box or locking bin (anchored to the ground).
