Neighborhood Safety Tips

Strong neighborhoods are safer neighborhoods. Building relationships with neighbors and staying alert can help prevent crime and create a greater sense of community.

Get to Know Your Neighbors

  • Introduce yourself and share contact information if you’re comfortable.
  • Keep an eye out for unusual activity – and check in on elderly or vulnerable neighbors.
  • Have a yearly block party to welcome new neighbors and network with all.
  • Participate in your neighborhood council! Neighborhood council meetings are a great way to meet your neighbors. Spokane Police Department Neighborhood Resource Officers frequently attend the meetings too. Visit the Neighborhood Councils website.

Keep Shared Spaces Safe

  • Report broken streetlights, street hazards, or graffiti to 311.
  • Keep yards and alleys clear to improve visibility.

Watch for Suspicious Activity

  • Someone trying car doors or peeking into windows.
  • Unfamiliar vehicles parked for long periods.
  • People loitering around homes or businesses without a clear reason.

See something? Say something. Call Crime Check at 509.456.2233 for non-emergencies, or 911 if a crime is in progress.

Join a Block Watch Group

  • Work together with neighbors and officers to report concerns and improve safety.
  • Encourage communication and plan neighborhood meetings or safety walks.
