Older Adult Safety

Empowering independence while staying safe. Older adults can be especially vulnerable to scams, fraud, and crimes of opportunity – but simple steps can make a big difference in staying secure and confident.

Safety at Home

  • Always check who’s at the door before answering – use a peephole or talk through the door.
  • Avoid sharing personal or financial information over the phone unless you initiated the call.
  • Keep doors and windows locked, even during the day.

Did You Know? Many scams targeting older adults come in the form of fake phone calls from “grandchildren,” tech support, or government agencies. If something feels off, it’s okay to hang up and call the organization directly.

Phone & Email Scams

  • Be wary of urgent calls asking for money, gift cards, or personal info – even if they say it’s a family member in trouble.
  • Don’t click links in suspicious emails or texts. When in doubt, delete it.
  • Report scams to a trusted friend, caregiver, or local authorities.

Staying Safe While Out and About

  • Try to go out during daylight hours and keep your phone charged and with you.
  • If mobility is a concern, consider walking with a friend or using a well-traveled route.
  • Use public transportation stops that are well-lit and have regular service.
