Personal Safety

A little awareness goes a long way.
Whether you're running errands, heading to class, or enjoying a walk downtown, these habits can help you feel more confident and stay safe wherever you go.

When You're Walking

  • Look up and stay aware of your surroundings—avoid going into "autopilot" mode.
  • Keep your phone tucked away unless you need it. Looking down at your screen makes it harder to spot hazards or suspicious behavior.
  • Walk with confidence and purpose. Projecting awareness can deter potential trouble.
  • If you wear headphones, keep the volume low or just one earbud in so you can still hear what’s going on around you.

Did You Know? Many people are targeted simply because they appear distracted. Walking confidently and staying aware makes a big difference.

While Using Transit

  • Keep your backpack, purse, or packages close—either on your lap, over your shoulder, or between your feet.
  • Move your backpack to your front in crowded spaces so you can keep an eye on it.
  • Stay alert—even if you’re reading, glance up regularly.
  • Report problems on the bus to the driver, and call 911 if it’s an emergency.
