Robbery & Theft Prevention

Smart habits help keep your belongings safe. Whether you’re heading to work, walking downtown, or enjoying Spokane’s nightlife, these simple tips can help you avoid becoming a target for theft.

Keep Your Stuff Secure

  • Carry your ID and keys in separate locations, just in case.
  • Avoid displaying phones, headphones, jewelry, or other expensive items when you’re walking.
  • Keep your bag close to your body and zipped shut.
  • Only use your phone when needed, then tuck it away again.
  • Write down your phone’s make, model, and serial number. Enable GPS tracking features just in case.
  • Wear jewelry under your clothing when possible to avoid drawing attention.

Did You Know? Pickpockets often work in teams. If someone distracts you, another may be reaching into your bag or pocket.

ATMs and Cash

  • Choose well-lit, busy ATMs – preferably inside grocery stores or banks.
  • If you use the “tap to withdraw” feature, make sure you’ve completed your transaction and closed the session before leaving the ATM.
  • Put away your card and cash before walking away.
  • Don’t carry more cash than necessary, and never flash large bills.

If Someone Confronts You

  • Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, change direction or enter a nearby business.
  • If a car follows you, don’t approach it – turn and walk the other way.
  • If someone demands your wallet or phone, hand it over. Your safety comes first.
  • If someone tries to grab you, make a scene. Yell loudly – “Help! Police!” – and do whatever you can to get away.
