Staying Safe at Large Events

Spokane hosts some amazing community events – like Bloomsday and Hoopfest – that bring together thousands of people. Whether you’re participating, volunteering, or just watching the event, here are some ways to stay safe and have fun:

Bloomsday & Running Events

  • Leave valuables at home or store them securely – fanny packs and runners’ belts work great.
  • Stick with friends or family and agree on a meeting point in case you get separated.
  • Stay hydrated and listen to your body – seek help if you feel unwell.
  • If you’re bringing kids, write your contact info on a wristband or card they can carry. Take a photo of the kids the day of the event so you can share with police in case you get separated.

Hoopfest & Downtown Crowds

  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially in busy downtown areas or parking garages.
  • Keep your phone and wallet in a secure pocket or bag.
  • Watch out for scams or people selling fake tickets or merchandise.
  • Use public transit or ride shares when possible – parking can get tight!

Did You Know? During large events, extra police and volunteers are often on hand to assist. Don’t hesitate to approach them if you need help or directions.
