Vehicle Theft Prevention

Auto theft is often fast, quiet, and opportunistic. A few preventative steps can make your car far less attractive to a thief.

What Thieves Look For

  • Keys left in the car (including hidden spare keys)
  • Unlocked doors or open windows
  • Valuables in plain sight
  • Poor lighting or isolated parking
  • Cars without theft deterrents

Did You Know? Most stolen vehicles are recovered, and many are taken for temporary transportation rather than parts.

How to Protect Your Car

  • Always take your keys, even for short stops.
  • Lock doors and close windows every time you park.
  • Use an anti-theft device.
  • Park in well-lit, visible areas.
  • Turn your wheels toward the curb to make towing harder.
  • Don’t leave your title or registration in the glove box.
  • Consider etching your VIN or WA Driver License number on removable parts or items targeted by thieves (like catalytic converters).
  • Review your vehicle owner’s manual for vehicle-specific tips.

While You’re Driving

  • Keep doors locked and windows up, even in safe areas.
  • Leave enough space to maneuver at stops.
  • Avoid stopping for unknown individuals – call for help instead.
