Visitor Safety Tips

Welcome to Spokane!

We’re glad you’re here. Spokane is a vibrant city with beautiful parks, great restaurants, and a walkable downtown core. Whether this is your first visit or one of many, here are a few simple ways to make the most of your time while staying safe.

Getting Around Town

  • Plan your route and stick to main roads when driving.
  • Always lock your car – even for quick stops – and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Park in well-lit, populated areas and check your surroundings before getting in or out of your vehicle.
  • If your car breaks down, stay with it if possible. Use hazard lights, pop the hood, and call for assistance.

Did You Know? A thief may watch you stash valuables in your trunk. If you need to hide items, do it before you arrive at your parking spot.

Hotel & Lodging Tips

  • Keep your room number private – don’t say it out loud or write it on public documents.
  • Use all locks on your hotel room door, and never open the door without confirming who’s there (even if they say they’re staff).
  • Don’t leave valuables in your room; use the room safe or front desk safe deposit box.
  • Know where emergency exits and stairwells are located.

While Sightseeing or Shopping

  • Travel with a companion when possible, especially at night.
  • Stay alert in crowds and be mindful of pickpockets – especially if someone bumps into you or tries to distract you.
  • Carry your purse securely across your body and keep wallets in a front pocket or inside your jacket.
  • Don’t flash large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry.
  • If someone makes you feel uncomfortable or aggressively asks for money, trust your instincts and leave the area. You can always call the police to report concerning behavior.
