Just before 9 PM on Thursday, March 5, 2020, companies from the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) were dispatched to a structure fire at 4009 East 9th Street. SFD dispatchers had received a call reporting a fire on the kitchen stove, threatening extension to the kitchen cabinets and ceiling. First arriving SFD crews were on scene within four-minutes of dispatch and found a working fire in the kitchen with heavy smoke spreading throughout the home. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire and keep it from progressing to adjoining rooms and the attic space.

The home ultimately sustained fire damage to the kitchen and significant smoke damage throughout the home. Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours to search for any hidden fire and ensure complete extinguishment.

There were four people home at the time of the fire, and all safely escaped before SFD arrival. There was neither injury to civilians nor firefighters.

The SFD Special Investigation Unit (SIU) was on scene to determine the cause of the fire. At the time of this release, the cause of the fire is considered undetermined. Initial estimates of the structure's total value is $175,000, and the SFD saved $145,000 worth of property.
