At approximately 1:00 am on Wednesday, July 22nd, units from the Spokane Fire Department and Spokane Valley Fire Departments were dispatched to a vehicle extrication at the intersection of Freya and Springfield. Once on scene, fire department personnel encountered a single vehicle with 2 trapped occupants. The vehicle had sustained significant front-end damage when it hit a large-diameter steel fence/guard rail. The impact had pushed the vehicle's engine into the passenger compartment. The dislocated engine compartment along with accompanying vehicle body damage created a challenging extrication for fire department crews. The combination of highly trained specialists and the availability of specialized tools enabled crews to successfully extricate both patients in just over 25 minutes.

Both vehicle occupants were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries.

A total of 16 firefighters responded to the incident and there were no reported injuries to the first responders.
