Just before 3:49 AM Sunday, Nov. 22, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) responded to the report of a structure on fire in the 1600 Block of East 1st Avenue. The first company arrived from their station (two blocks away) within minutes and found a detached garage near an apartment building fully involved in fire.
Initial arriving companies were successful in quickly knocking down the fire's main body, which was confined to the garage itself and did not threaten any adjacent structures. Many tires and other debris complicated complete extinguishment in the garage that had to be removed to expose the remaining pockets of fire. There were no injuries to civilians or SFD personnel.
The nature of the incident is undetermined, and the case remains under investigation.
