Saturday, Dec. 12, 5:30 pm, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) responded to the 4300 Block of North Monroe to a cooking fire in a single-family residence. The 911 caller indicated he was the sole occupant of the structure, and a grease fire had started in the kitchen and was spreading to the cabinets and floor. He explained that he had tried to extinguish the fire; however, he had to abandon his efforts due to being burned and suffering breathing problems.

The first SFD company arrived shortly after dispatch and found the occupant on the home's porch in distress. Additional SFD companies arrived soon after and extinguished the fire completely. They confirmed that it did not spread to adjacent areas or into the attic.

The SFD's Special Investigations Unit determined the fire's nature to be accidental and caused by a grease cooking fire.
