Friday, Dec. 11, 5:05 pm, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) responded to the 3300 Block of East 55th Avenue to a cooking fire in a ground-level apartment unit of a large multi-family apartment complex. Initial arriving companies from District 8 reported smoke coming from the unit's front door and identified one adult and child experiencing smoke inhalation. SFD companies arrived shortly afterward, made entry into the apartment, and found a cooking fire extinguished by the building's automatic fire suppression system.

The fire was extinguished entirely and confined within the immediate cooking area. Several fire companies together to stop water flow from the suppression system (photo) and provided care to the occupants.

The SFD's Special Investigations Unit determined the fire's nature to be accidental and cause by a grease-related cooking fire.
