At approximately 2:48 am this morning, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) responded to the 2400 Block of East Rockwell in the Hillyard neighborhood to a report of a house on fire. Initial reports from Spokane Fire Communications stated residents reported that a deck was on fire and had spread to the residence. SFD fire companies arrived in less than four minutes after dispatch and reported moderate fire from the back of a single-story home that had already extended into the attic.

One occupant and two dogs were able to make it out safely before SFD's arrival. Fire companies quickly made entry into the structure to begin a coordinated fire attack and search of the residence to ensure all occupants were safely out.

The fire was contained within 10 minutes after arrival. Seven SFD fire apparatus along with 22 firefighters responded to control the incident. There were neither injuries to civilians nor firefighters as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the SFD Special Investigation Unit.

Remember: Working smoke alarms save lives, cutting the risk of dying in a home fire in half. Smoke alarms should be installed in every room used for sleeping, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Test your smoke alarm once a month. Make sure everyone in your home understands the sound the smoke alarm makes and knows what to do when activated.
