Thursday, Dec. 2 at 12:55 PM, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) was dispatched to a fire in an apartment at 5111 South Regal Street.

Initial companies arrived within 5-minutes of dispatch to find smoke coming from the first-floor unit of a three-story apartment building. Firefighters entered the apartment unit and rapidly extinguished the fire inside while simultaneously searching for potential victims.

The apartment was evacuated before SFD's arrival. The apartment occupant was alerted to the fire by the activation of a smoke detector.

This fire was rapidly controlled by five engine companies, three ladder companies, a safety officer, and two battalion chiefs. A total of 30 firefighters worked to contain and extinguish the fire and successfully prevented any significant fire extension beyond the area of origin.

Thankfully there were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. However, the fire displaced three adults, one child, and numerous pets. The Red Cross is aiding the occupants.

The fire was investigated by members of the Spokane Fire Department Special Investigation Unit (SIU), and the cause was determined to be a clothes dryer fire.
