On Monday, August 8, 2022, at approximately 11:34 PM, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) responded to the 2900 Block of East Everett in the Hillyard neighborhood on a report of a possible house fire. Initial reports from Spokane Fire Communications stated a possible attic fire. Fire companies arrived less than four minutes after dispatch and reported smoke showing from the top floor of a one-and-one-half-story residence.

The house appeared vacant, with plywood covering all doors and windows. First arriving companies entered the structure to begin a coordinated fire attack and search of the home to ensure all occupants were safely out. Simultaneously, crews were positioned to ventilate the building to improve conditions and remove heat if needed. Firefighters discovered a heavy fire in the attic space caused by a Molotov Cocktail (glass container filled with gasoline). Firefighters quickly extinguished the attic fire with resources from the initial alarm.

No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported. The cause of the fire was an improvised incendiary device and is being investigated by the Spokane Fire Special Investigation Unit.
