Mayor to declare Monday Jacob M. Hess Day

Spokane Mayor David Condon will declare Monday, January 13, 2014 as Sgt. Jacob M. Hess Day in honor of the fallen Marine who attended North Central High School. The proclamation reads in part, “Sergeant Hess was a Spokane native whose bright spirit brought joy to those around him, both here and abroad, and we, as a community, must take this opportunity to honor this young Marine and his family.”

The full proclamation will be read at Monday's City Council meeting. It is as follows:

“WHEREAS, the City of Spokane seeks to honor all veterans who serve to protect the freedoms we enjoy as citizens of the United States, especially those Spokane natives who embody the virtues that our community holds dear; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Jacob M. Hess gave his life for our country while supporting combat operations in the Helmand Province, Afghanistan while assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 26, Marine Aircraft Group 26, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; and

WHEREAS, our local citizens in the armed forces exemplify and uphold the core values of the Spokane community through their service, selflessness, and sacrifice; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Hess was a Spokane native whose bright spirit brought joy to those around him, both here and abroad, and we, as a community, must take this opportunity to honor this young Marine and his family:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, David A. Condon, Mayor of the City of Spokane, on behalf of the citizens of Spokane do hereby proclaim Monday, January 13, 2014,

SERGEANT JACOB M. HESS DAY

in Spokane, and urge citizens to join me in this special observance.”
