The Spokane City Council approved the process for replacing Councilmember Steve Salvatori during a public meeting on Thursday, officially announced the District 3 opening and began accepting applications for the position.

Application materials are available at spokanecity.org, the City Council Offices and the My Spokane desk on the first floor of City Hall. Completed materials are due to the City Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. on July 24.

Candidates must have lived in City Council District 3 since Aug. 18, 2013. District 3 encompasses the area north of the Spokane River and west of Division Street.

Salvatori announced his resignation last month. His last council meeting was on Monday.

Following is the timeline adopted by the City Council:

  • Application process closes on July 24 at 5 p.m.
  • Council members will review all applications, may interview applicants and must submitted their top five list to Council President Ben Stuckart by July 31
  • A committee comprised of councilmembers Stuckart, Mike Allen and Candace Mumm will review and compile council member rankings and determine the top applicants for interviews by entire council by Aug. 1
  • The full council will interview the top candidates. Interviews will be open to the public during a properly noticed council meeting between Aug. 11 – 15
  • The full council, in open session, will vote to fill the vacancy on Aug. 18
